I wasn't woken up by rain during the night! That meant I got up nice and early and got going.
I didn't really think through the washing I did last night. Of course, it was still all wet. I had a plan though - I would strap stuff to the back of the bike and rotate throughout the day.
So off I went with washing drying in the morning breeze. Unfortunately, I wasn't really concentrating and took a wrong turn. I got 3 miles down the road before I realised. I turned around and went the correct way. Not too bad, but still an annoying waste of time.
I got to the nearest town (Machynlleth) and went to the only shop that was open that early on a Sunday. A Spar that also had a Gregg's attached! First one if the trip. So I loaded up with all manner of greasy baked goods, washed it down with a coffee and hit the main road to Aberystwyth.
This was really fast, but also very quiet. I was eating up the miles.
Some hills became involved and my pace slowed somewhat. I got some more food on the town's outskirts, then pretty much went straight through.
I then had a decision to make - either continue on the main roads or take the scenic route (NCN82 I think). I took the latter.
I'm glad I did as it was a great mix of off-road tracks and country lanes. It did slow my progress, but I'm here to tour the country, not just blast round on the main roads!
One section was "Closed" but the thought of turning back and detouring was too painful to contemplate after the hills I'd just been up and down to get there!
As I suspected, you could still get through. There was evidence of some tree felling work, but being a Sunday, there was nobody about.
I then had a really long stretch of disusssed railway line, that was lovely and flat if a little rough under wheel.
I stopped for more food and noticed time had got away from me somewhat It was a bit annoying as I would have liked to have got a little further, but all the campsites at the perfect distance away were eirher for motorhomes or they were those overpriced glamping sites or in the case of an otherwise perfect spot, for naturists!
So I decided to stay at a site just past Lampeter. I stopped quite early, but that has given me the chance to dry my washing properly. My on the bike drying plan was not very successful!
The site is ok - nice and quiet and right on route for a quick exit in the morning.
The weather forecast is good, so I can look forward to another uninterrupted night!
