Day 3 - Bowness-on-Solway to Nethertown
ShowMap
Had a pretty good night's sleep despite the heat. I just lay on top of my sleeping bag for most of the night!
I was packed up reasonably quickly and was on the road for about 07:40. It was going to be a long hot day, but almost pan flat all the way.
It was pretty remote where I was and I knew there were no shops until the town of Silloth which was getting on for 25 miles away. I wasn't too worried as I had plenty of water and could survive without food for a while.
The roads were very quiet and hugged the coast for much of the time. There wasn't a great deal to see to be honest other than the giant Anthorn Radio Station.
I eventually got to Silloth and went straight to the Co-op to buy a load of food. I snaffled that down in the main park, then went on the hunt for some sun cream! As luck would have it, there was a chemist nearby, so I got some in there. They were doing a roaring trade!
As the day started to really hot up, I was glad the route followed the coast. There was a lovely fresh breeze!
After the initial remoteness, there seemed to be a town every few miles along the coast. I stopped for water a couple of times, but was alright for food.
As I got closer to the larger town of Workington, I was on a classic disused railway path. It went on for miles and took me all the way to and through Whitehaven.
The campsite I was heading for was just past Egremont, so I stopped for supplies in a big Co-op before knocking off the last few miles to the campsite.
When I arrived, there was nobody around. I looked up the number and called, but there was no reply. I left a message and waited around as I wasn't sure what to do. I then got a text saying he was busy and should "Text to book". I wasn't really sure what to make of that, so I replied, went in, pitched my tent and waited. And waited....
... it's 7 o'clock now and he's still not got back to me! I've had my dinner and everything. I'm the only one here, so I'm staying!
A shorter day tomorrow. In distance at least. It more than makes up for it in elevation as I head into the Lake District.
Edit:
Finally spoke to someone! Not the owner, but their sister who had just turned up to feed the horses! She said it was fine and to just leave a tenner in the honesty box. Which I was going to do anyway. Right - a shower!
