Proper hills!

Instance:

The day started the same as usual - wake up super early, consider getting up, then abandon that idea as ridiculous and go back to sleep! I was away before 8 again even though the day was to be fairly short. There would be a lot of climbing though and I wanted to take it easy in this heat.

I was in the middle of nowhere with no shops, cafés or even petrol stations to get supplies until 12 miles in. That obviously isn't very far, but I knew it would take a fair while as there was a 1000 foot pass to get over first!

Before that though, I had to navigate my way around Sellafield and all the surrounding infrastructure. Pretty straight forward in the end and I soon started to go up.

The scenery changed and I was very much on the edge of the Lake District.

Even early on it was hot. I had enough water to get me over the hill, but I would need to replenish at the bottom. I would also need food!

Fortunately there was a great little café in the village of Ennerdale Bridge.

The climb wasn't too bad. Drank loads of water and got it done.

I had a Panini again at the café (that's all everywhere seems to sell around here!) and stocked up on water.

The next bit was actually pretty easy in comparison - quite a bit of up and down, but nothing too mad. There was a really nice stretch along Loweswater. Quite a few people swimming and paddle boarding.

I did need to stop again for water at the foot of the longest climb. Fortunately there was a great little shop/café in the village of Lorton.

I got drinks and more importantly, had an ice-cream.

Then it was onwards and upwards. The climb was pretty stiff right from the off. I kept thinking "I'll stop round the next corner", but I just kept going.

When I was about half way up I found the perfect place to rest in a shady, tree lined section.

I got water down me and poured some over my very hot head!

I then realised two things - firstly, I was actually on Whinlatter Pass and secondly, I was way more than half way up - I was nearly done!

So over the top I went and then it was a long descent into Keswick.

I faffed around a bit - went to sit in a park and scoff some food and checked the final few miles of my route to the campsite I wanted to stay at. Of course, it was up a massive hill!

Just about still alive, I rolled into the site. It's very nice. Has a shop and all that kind of stuff.

Bit weird being somewhere with other people! There's some some sort of Instagram couple opposite me. They got all the kit out and then did their piece to camera with me despising them more and more with every passing "Hey guys!" They've buggered off somewhere now, which probably saved their lives...

Now I just have to decide what to do for food. I could either walk or cycle back into Keswick, or I could just get something from the shop. I shall decide shortly.

Hopefully there are no thunder storms tonight, I'm getting used to getting up to warm, dry conditions!

Lake District looks beautiful as always, although much hotter than usual!
