I awoke to grey but dry skies. A few layers had to go on as it was a lot chillier than it's been in the mornings!
There were also quite a lot of midgies around. Not as persistent as their Scottish cousins, but still irritating!
I got off at around 7 and headed towards the first climb of the day. Well, it started almost straight away! The Buttertubs Pass or Col du Buttertubs as French TV captioned it when Le Tour came through what must be more than 10 years ago now!
The climb was nice. Not too steep - at least for most of it. There were a few steep bits nearer the top where I had to dig in.
I was keeping my eyes peeled for the butter tubs themselves - not really knowing what I was looking for. I thought I'd missed them, or maybe you needed to leave the road to get to them, but then I found some likely candidates and a quick Google image search revealed that I had indeed found them! Once I'd had a look I pressed on.
As has been the case on all these hills - I've had them pretty much to myself. It took about an hour to get up, look around and down the other side and I only saw 4 cars! And 2 of those were right at the end.
My next stop would be Hawes for some breakfast. I found a Spar with coffee and breakfast stuff. I had two PACs and a croissant. Only they weren't PACS - they had jam in them rather than chocolate! Took me by surprise, but they were delicious!
Doing one big climb at the start of the day just wasn't enough! I was now faced with the rather daunting Fleet Moss pass - which I found out is the highest paved road in Yorkshire!
Like 'tubs, it was mostly a manageable gradient. Near the top there were some brutality steep sections that I had to break up into 50 metre bursts just to get up them. Lots of rests, but no walking!
The descent was fun and I actually had quite a few miles of generally downhill even once I was off the main hill . This was good as to be honest, I was pretty cooked after that two bang climb opener!
I had my eye on a campsite just east of Colne. It was still a fair distance, so I just took my time enjoying the views and stopping for snacks regularly in some of the many little towns I passed through. It was all rather uneventful really.
I made sure my last co-op stop included food for dinner, then let Google maps guide me to the campsite.
Although still officially in the Yorkshire Dales, I am actually in Lancashire. I wonder if the locals resent that?!
I'm just waiting for the owner to turn up so I can pay, then I think I'll settle in for the night.
I was very tired all day today, so an early night should sort me out...
